CANCELLED Today’s world is a somber place, with wars, famine, scorching heat, major storms, political unrest, etc. With all that’s going on, people ignore or forget the humor, beauty, surprise, curiosity, or positive emotions that continuously occur around us. Often, they are found in little things, like sunsets, a humorous sign, an unusual rock, the wonder of a flower, etc. While this is not a photography class, Creve Maples uses photographs to illustrate odd, humorous, peaceful, silly, and curious things that we encounter every day, but fail to “notice”. The purpose of the camera in these cases, is not to take great photos but to capture things that are meaningful to you. Reflecting on scenes that you find interesting, and the emotions they elicit, will not only lighten your day, but will reveal many things about yourself. The camera in this context is simply an aid to help you focus your attention on a small part of the world around you and to help see it for what’s interesting. It will help you learn to see and discover.

Creve Maples has a degree in chemistry (MIT) and a PhD in nuclear science (UC Berkeley). He has worked in academia and the private sector, designing advanced computers, and developing virtual reality systems. His classes result from a scientific curiosity and desire to explore unusual, thought-provoking topics.
