At the time of his death in 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero was an outspoken critic of the military junta of El Salvador. His concern for the poor, and those who were “disappeared” made him a very popular religious personality in El Salvador and beyond. He was murdered while saying Mass in 1980. In 2018 he was made a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
Scott Sharp is the Executive Director of Albuquerque Oasis. Sharp holds degrees in education and theology. He has had an interest in the story and legacy of Oscar Romero since the 1990’s when he was introduced to liberation theologians like Gustavo Gutierrez, and Jon Sobrino, whose ministries were among the poor in South America.
