Senator Martin Hickey, MD and Lance Chilton, MD discuss what to expect in the upcoming 60-day legislative session beginning in January. They review the process by which bills become law (or not) and how our state’s budget gets put together. They discuss interim committee work and how that work translates into legislation. Hickey and Chilton discuss the areas where they have greatest interest and expertise, which includes education issues, health care issues, and elder care. Finally, they speculate about expected changes brought about by the November election and leadership changes in the House of Representatives.
Sen. Martin Hickey serves on the interim Legislative Health and Human Services Committee, and during the session – Senate Tax, Business, and Transportation and Senate Education Committees. Dr. Lance Chilton has worked for the Legislative Finance Committee for past six years and was an Albuquerque pediatrician for 43 years.
