South Africa contains a wide range of very large and important mineral deposits. These include diamonds, gold, platinum, chromium, and several others. These important concentrations of mineral wealth, and the individuals who developed South Africa into a major economic powerhouse such as Cecil Rhodes and Ernest Oppenheimer, among others, have played an enormous role in the history of the country since the mid-1600s. Yet today, South Africa experiences up to 16 hours per day of electrical load shedding. Why?

John Geissman is a professor emeritus of geoscience at the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of New Mexico. He received a BS, MS, and PhD in geology from the University of Michigan. He is a past president of the Geological Society of America (GSA) and editor for the GSA Bulletin. He has over 300 peer-reviewed science journal contributions.
