The revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving the development of data centers across the country. Project Jupiter is one of the largest data centers proposed in New Mexico, with the potential to provide jobs and economic development in southern New Mexico, but it also raises concerns about air pollution and the consumption of scarce water resources. How can communities evaluate potential benefits and concerns in an attempt to strike a proper balance in the AI revolution?
Clifford Villa is a Professor of Law at UNM School of Law, Director of the UNM Natural Resources and Environmental Law Program, and Supervising Attorney for the UNM Natural Resources and Environmental Law Clinic. Appointed during the Biden administration to a leadership role with the US EPA Office of Land and Emergency Management, Villa also worked more than 20 years as an EPA attorney in Washington, D.C., Denver, and Seattle.
