Description

When did people first feel spiritual longings? What form did these longings take? Joyce Salisbury explores the origins of religion from the Neolithic era through Hinduism, the world’s oldest urban religion, showing how people have recognized and respected the divine. Religions like Buddhism are also considered, as they introduce a distinctly human dimension to the spiritual universe.

Joyce Salisbury is Professor Emerita of medieval history who has written over 10 books on religious history,  including Perpetua’s Passion, Rome’s Christian Empress, and The First Christian Communities. She has also recorded four series of Great Courses, including the forthcoming Mediterranean World. Salisbury is an award-winning lecturer who has appeared on PBS, the History Channel, and NPR.
