Description
South Africa has been in the news of late for several reasons. The Rainbow Nation has a rich and incredibly varied geology and a recent history that was steeply influenced by the discovery of gold, diamonds, chromium, and other geologic materials in the 19th century. This course covers many aspects of South Africa’s geology, including the Karoo Basin Permian—Triassic extinction record and the terroir of the southern Western Cape.
John Geissman is a professor emeritus of geoscience at the University of Texas at Dallas and the UNM. He received a BS, MS, and PhD in geology from the University of Michigan. He is a past president of the Geological Society of America (GSA) and editor for the GSA Bulletin. He has over 300 peer-reviewed science journal contributions.
