Now 200 years old, the Erie Canal altered this country in terms of public works, economic growth, religious diversity, and social reform. We examine its genesis and its construction as it launched the movement of the United States into a new world of economic power and productivity. The canal opened the country into the Midwest and in doing so, cemented ties that helped solidify the new republic while making New York the Empire State.
David Crowley taught political science at Illinois State and Augustana College before becoming a pastor. He has an interest in American history and has presented history related topics to a variety of organizations.
