By examining original businesses still in operation and historic sites along the post-1937 alignment, Donatella Davanzo explores how their physical, symbolic, and cultural features preserve and reinterpret the stories of the Route 66 era while continuing to adapt to the social and economic realities of the present.
Italian American anthropologist and photo ethnographer Donatella Davanzo,PhD, documents traditional communities and historic sites in Italy and New Mexico through photography and visual research. Her recent project, “Route 66 Connected” (2022–2026), focuses on documenting original properties along Route 66 in New Mexico and preserving the cultural stories tied to the historic highway.
