From the origins of forensic psychology, legal and police professionals have turned to psychologists to help them solve crimes. Psychological profiling is the most famous, and most controversial, of these methods. What does the history of this field reveal? Although profiling methodology has become more sophisticated over the past 75 years, a closer look shows both the techniques that have assisted investigators and those that have occasionally led them astray.
William Foote received his PhD from the UNM in 1978 and taught at UNM in the School of Law and the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. He spent more than 40 years in private practice as a forensic psychologist and served as a consultant to the New Mexico State Police, Albuquerque Police Department, and the CIA. Foote has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and co-authored three books with Jane Goodman-Delahunty.
