Jim Lewis discusses the Civil Rights Movement in the South, 1954-1963, preluding his personal experiences amid the region’s transformation. Lewis was a civil rights worker and lawyer in Mississippi from 1965 to 1973 and this course is based on his real world education. The class includes discussions of Brown v. Board of Education, the Birmingham protests, and the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference among other key historical events.

Jim Lewis has degrees from Yale, University of Chicago Law School, and Duke. Lewis was a civil rights worker and lawyer from 1965 to 1973 in Mississippi, and his course is based on his “real world” education there. He has taught at law schools and worked for the United States Department of Justice, including six years as United States Attorney for Central Illinois.
