Influenza is a common disease found worldwide and occurring at least annually. In 1918, our planet was affected by an influenza virus that killed at least 40 million people, when our knowledge about transmission, prevention, and treatment was limited. We discuss factors today in combatting influenza, including the source of the virus, public health policies, treatment, and recognition of the threat to humans.
Marilyn London is an assistant research professor at the University of Maryland. She earned her MA at the University of New Mexico. Her career has included teaching at UMD and the George Washington University. She has served as a forensic anthropologist with a federal disaster response team and assisted the Department of Defense in the recovery of the remains of US military Missing in Action (MIA) from World War II.
