Description
New Mexico has a richer collection of murals by Indigenous artists than possibly any other state. They are found in major cities, small towns, pueblos, and rural areas on reservations. Robin Dunitz shares the mural treasures she has photographed during four years of travel, along with the stories behind them, the artists’ backgrounds, the traditions that inspire their work, and the personal messages they bring to life through color and form.
Robin Dunitz has been documenting murals since 1983. She spent 20 years as tour director of the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles and is the author or co-author of three books on murals. Having lived in New Mexico for the past four years, Dunitz has been documenting the state’s Indigenous murals. She has also published two postcard books, one showcasing New Mexican murals by Indigenous artists and another on Southwest Indigenous murals.
