Description
In 1964, Brazilians dropped a musical bombshell on the American jazz world. “Bossa Nova” (“new beat”) was introduced by a soft-spoken, charming amateur singer named Astrud Gilberto, accompanied by a brilliant American saxophonist and a retinue of Brazil’s most accomplished musicians. It was a gigantic commercial success that pumped new life into an increasingly cerebral, but declining jazz scene. This program looks at the remarkable fusion of two musical cultures through discussion and performance by jazz pianist Robert Lah and jazz flutist Linda Davidson.
Robert Lah is a lifelong jazz pianist and educator. He taught music at levels K-college, including high school and university jazz ensembles. He has worked with jazz combos, big bands, dance bands, and symphonies. He is an experienced arranger and composer and performs locally with a variety of jazz groups. Linda Davidson is a well-known Albuquerque jazz flutist who leads Jazz To Go.
