North America’s geologic basement, or foundation, was pieced together like a puzzle over a period of about a billion years. The scars of that assembly, and the later jostling of those pieces by subsequent events, have resulted in the geology we see today. Geologic features, such as the Jemez lineament, are surface expressions of those deep structures. This big-picture, user-friendly talk will help make the geology of North America and New Mexico more understandable.
Dirk Van Hart spent 25 years as a petroleum geologist in Oklahoma, Texas, Central and South America, and Italy, plus 12 years as a geologist in New Mexico. Since semi-retirement in 2003 he has published three books and given more than 25 talks at Oasis.
