Description

Basket weaving, a universal art form found around the globe, is a foundation of civilization dating back at least 25,000 years. Working raw fiber into a shape and form that is both useful and beautiful is a paramount human experience. Learn some history of weaving, explore the world of African basketry, and hear about Cael Chappell’s journey as a basketry artist, importer, loom weaver, and now owner of Albuquerque’s only fiber arts center.

Cael Chappell has been working with weavers in Africa since 1991. In 2002, he founded Baskets of Africa, his company that became the largest importer of African baskets in the world. Traveling across Africa to meet weavers, Cael discovered that basketry is as diverse as it is universal. Emanating from his deep understanding of traditional African basketry, he quickly developed his own unique style of whimsical weaving from waxed linen thread. His improvised miniature and small baskets exhibit personality and life to engage viewers.
