The history of diamond mining traces the shift from early discoveries of diamonds in riverbeds to the later understanding that most come from volcanic kimberlite pipes. Research has focused on identifying which kimberlites contain diamonds, while a longstanding geological puzzle remains: why do these volcanic formations occur in areas of very thick and deep granite? We also dive into modern diamond manufacturing, current industrial and technological uses, and the relatively few diamond deposits found within the United States.

Paul Parmentier is a retired geologist living in Los Lunas. After graduating from the University of Brussels in Belgium and Kyushu University in Japan, he spent thirty years practicing environmental geology in California and an additional five years conducting geothermal exploration in the United States, Alaska, and Japan.
