Description
The Orphan Train Movement sent over 250,000 children to new homes in every one of the 48 contiguous states between 1854 and 1929. Who started this movement? How were children and adult couples or families chosen? Who were some famous orphans, and what became of the orphan train riders? This talk also provides resources for further reading and research on the topic.
Don Potter is a retired teacher from Wisconsin who moved to Albuquerque in 2017. When he retired in 2010, he began researching his family history and discovered that his grandfather, who he knew was an orphan in New York City, had ridden an orphan train to Wisconsin when he was three years old. This discovery led to his learning more about the orphan train movement.
